Introduction
For the purpose of this research page, I've chosen the following piece of coursework that is creating a promotion package for a new film including features of a teaser trailer and print packages. Personally I found this brief to be quite interesting and enticing. I feel like I can go down many routes with this brief and allow myself to succeed with excellent work throughout the year. Both my print and moving image skills shall be tested for the purpose of this brief, additionally allowing me to show off my technical skills and creativity as well as exposing my knowledge to understanding audiences and institutions alongside the generic conventions of what is typically expected from a teaser trailer and promotional print packages. Below you shall find all my work that is derived from my coursework decision. Successfully posted upon this page, it shall show my progress to understanding the teaser trailer and how this will all benefit towards myself creating my own final products consisting of what the brief wants.
Defining a Teaser Trailer
I've made the decision to create a teaser trailer for my A2 Media Coursework 2016. In order for myself to fully understand what a teaser trailer is exactly, I've made research into what a teaser is and how I can define it personally. This can help me to helping understanding what one is and how I will be able to use this knowledge within my own work as I come to create my own Teaser Trailer.A teaser trailer can be defined as a shortened version of a theatrical movie trailer used to create hype for an upcoming film. They're typically released to establish an audience to somewhat tease them into watching it, allowing them to successfully build up hype and make their own anticipations into what they could be watching once released. A teaser trailer is typically expected to be released a year prior to the movie itself, and some are even created whilst the film is in the post production stages, this is typically done to build up a high clientele of audiences whom will watch the film and keep the film budget figures from dropping and the reputation of the film company quite high.

So makes a teaser trailer different to a theatrical trailer? A teaser trailer is somewhat a minute long and contains early footage of the film itself, sometimes its released whilst the film is still in production and is used to satisfy the audience by giving them an insight as to what they shall be watching upon release. The teaser trailer is created to establish an early audience and begin rising the excitement for the films release whereas a theatrical movie trailer is a lot longer and actually depicts a story from the films plot. A theatrical movie trailer is typically released a few months prior towards the release and offers more information in terms of competitions, links and information regarding the film that audience members can easily gain access towards.

Types and Conventions of a Teaser Trailer
Target Audience Research
When creating a media product, such as the Horror Teaser Trailer for our moving image part, It is vital that we conduct audience research into the consumer of this said media product. In order to gain a valued insight to what we are aspiring to create. In order for this to come to life, it is vital that we identify the key features of what our audience desires that can allow our group to work towards expectations to meet with their interests and wants and needs.
In order to locate this information shall vary, however one would normally enter this stage throughout both qualitative and quantitative data. These two methods of data collecting is vital in establishing the audience opinions and desires towards creating a successful media product. The following methods can be defined as:
Qualitative Data: Typically comes from figures and numerical data based from peoples opinions, this tends to be in the form of secondary research such as data tables and question airs performed online or elsewhere.
Quantitative Data: Whereas the other form of research can be alternative research methods that can consist of both primary and secondary research gathered from the audience themselves.
Our group plan to conduct both primary and secondary research from both qualitative and quantitative data in order to obtain information regarding our choose media product, such as the horror teaser trailer. We need both methods of research to gather as much as we can in order to shape our plans efficiently well and broaden our research towards catering towards the wants and needs of our consumer. Both method sof research can be defined by;
Primary Research: Is when us as a group gathers information about the target audience in person, such as interviews, surveys, tick box, focus groups, one to one conference.
Advantages: Can be quick and easy to gain the desired information needed to progress on wards with our project. It can be directly linked towards our questions and can help to save time and effort as we eliminate the unnecessary questions and focus on what we really need from our selected group of target audience.
Disadvantages: Can be rather time consuming and we would have to be careful on who we pick to help carry out this research as some may take pleasure and humor out of it and will not take it as seriously as we hoped. Others may be uncomfortable in speaking with others or directly in front of a camera so this may not work to the best of our intentions.
Secondary Research: Is when our group gather information that has been collected by another sources such as the internet or books-this means that we did not personally set out to obtain the information required.
Advantages: Is quick and easy to obtain and will be efficient for us as time is of the essence to us mostly in this stage.
Disadvantages:It may not be the exact nor accurate information that we desire for the purpose of our project and may just be unnecessary in the long run of our project, resulting in our time wasted as we could not obtained the desired information that we were after.
After our group have explored the two main methods of conducting research, we have decided to work our best towards conducting as much research as we can in order to benefit our project and help shape our media product into something that we can be proud of.
We sat down and spoke about the potential ways of conducting this research and what we can possible do to take gather the information needed from our audience and incorporate this into our ideas ready for the planning stages.
We have decided upon gaining a general mix of research in order to help us throughout our research as well as planning stages, and this would be to devise a question air on survey monkey online and distribute this, in which we shall email to our fellow year group to complete in order to gain as much responses as we can from this. This can than aid towards quantitative data as the survey shall be in the form of data and numerical collections in which we can generate into responses and opinions to incorporate into our own work. This sample is maximum to 100 people answering yet this can still be helpful towards us with this many people answering.
We also decided on devising a focus group as well to gather primary research in which we set out to conduct an interview with a sampling of our target audience from all diverse backgrounds to help in which we can than ask them the questions we seek to actually shape our research. This can be effective for us as we can than do this one to one with them and gather relevant answers to what we our wanting. We our hoping to conduct the focus group soon and aim to gather a diverse selected few that is based from our target audience.
In regards towards what we would actually ask our participants, we sat down as a group to discuss this in detail to ensure that we were all confident of the questions we posed to ask. The questions we formulated upon was agreed on by the group and shall be displayed on a document further down.
Audience Research-Questions
Moving onward towards planning the production of our horror teaser trailer, our group needs to start planning primary research in gathering both Qualitative and Quantitative research to gather information regarding reliable and informative information that we can apply towards our production and aid within our work, enhancing the success of our production.
When moving on to audience research, we need to take into consideration what would be best suited to them and persuade audiences to consume the entity of the film.
In conclusion, we have decided to gather both qualitative and quantitative information, these methods being a survey produced online and a focus group to gain a wide insight of information. These methods we have decided upon as a group to center our focus towards and feel like asking these questions to our selected group of target audience would benefit us greatly.
Below I have gone into how asking these questions would help us within our research and benefit towards our research and planning stages for the production of our media moving image.
Questions Analysis:
Focus Group Questions: So these shall be the questions our group poses to ask our selected audience members in which we hope to gain valued insight towards their opinions regarding the horror genre and overall their thoughts and feelings towards a teaser trailer and how, based upon their opinions, we can strive to live up to their wants and needs and aim to make our own teaser trailer production as successful.
Again, we set out to present these surveys online to our fellow students in the year-this numerical and data collection of question shall help us to decipher through the responses rather quickly gaining us the answers we need in such as small space of time. Below are the questions our group set out to present on the inline site Survey Monkey, as a group we decided that it was best to construct it than forward the link over to Ms Brailsford to see if she would send this over the the year group for them to complete.
Emails for survey Monkey:
Below, I set out to email Ms Brailford about our survey in which she kindly took note of the link and sent it across to both the Yr12/Yr13s for the benefit of our project to gather relevant information regarding our project. Here our the exchange of emails.
This benefited us greatly as by the end of the day, our responses were filled up indicating that 100 people must of filled out the survey allowing us to log back on and gain the answers we needed in determining their responses.
With the completion of the this specific method of research we than began to work towards gathering people for our focus group in which we planned to film before the end of this week to start towards planning our production to give us more time in this.
Target Audience Responses:
From the survey we conducted online we have managed to construct a power point on the responses we gained back from the questions we asked on Survey Monkey. The responses were successful and allowed us to formulate our next steps in shaping our research for our horror teaser trailer. The responses gain back were insightful and intriguing and allowed to come that one step closer in acknowledge our target audience that we need to cater towards for our horror production.
This shall displayed the results of which the percipients filled put via survey monkey for our questionnaire, most gave us answers in which we can use but others did complete it with cruel intentions however regardless, we still managed to construct this piece of research and have thus benefitted from it greatly.
To cater towards the wants and needs of our intended target audience, we firstly needed to identify them and begin looking towards the important aspects within their lives such as age, gender, interests, geographical location socio-economic group, psychographic groupings. This creates an in depth understanding of audience and how we can represent of our characters, events, locations and actions within the horror teaser trailer content to be able to fully establish them and what they expect from us to produce from the text.
In conclusion of this task, I can confidently say that I've built up a confident understanding of what my intended target audience is to take the form of. This can than be effective for when the group and I come to work upon presentation within our medias content and how we can aim to present characters, events, locations and events throughout the horror teaser text whilst fulfilling the desires from our audiences as well as conforming to the gene conventions.
Focus Group
As we have successfully completed our findings for the survey, we than moved on to the focus group in which we have selected a diverse group of people in order to determine their own thoughts and feelings towards the horror genre and the teaser trailer in general.
In order to gain a valued insight towards researching for our horror teaser trailer, our group decided to hold a focus group in which we set out to ask relevant questions to our target audience on their views and thoughts towards the horror teaser teaser. We thought creating a focus group can be effective as it will allow our selected audience members to sit down and discuss among one another about the questions we ask them. This gives us thoughtful insights to their responses towards the horror teaser trailer and exhibition and distribution-allowing us to work from their responses and incorporate into our own studies. As we have successfully completed our findings for the survey, we than moved on to the focus group in which we have selected a diverse group of people in order to determine their own thoughts and feelings towards the horror genre and the teaser trailer in general.
This was an effective way of gathering data as the member of the focus group allowed to casually engage with one another and debate upon their own responses towards the questions directed at them It was interesting to watch as it showed multiple opinions and views regarding the horror genre.
In conclusion, I think gathering primary data like this has allowed our group to successfully incorporate their views and responses towards what our audiences thought of the Horror Teaser Trailer. To continue on, I shall pick out what our audiences said throughout the questions in order to construct a response in which I can quickly refer back towards and incorporate into my throughout the planning, production and post production stages.
With this data, as well as the survey responses we can now begin to alter our plans and cater towards the wants and needs of our target audience and cater towards their expectations and desires for our production, this shall help to shape our moving image throughout the planning stages and increase the overall chances of film consumption upon completion of our production.
Audience Research Survey Analysis:
Based upon the results from our survey, our group member Abi Bacon has constructed this piece of work detailing the responses and the analysis of each of the questions at hand. We can now access the information quicker and incorporate the responses into our plans and initial ideas for our groups production to cater to their wants, needs and desires.
Commissioning Process:
This stage of research is rather crucial to myself when creating my teaser trailer, it is vital in which I learn and educate myself about the crucial stages needed to increase the chances of success for my teaser. This stage is known as the commissioning process in which we prepare and ensure that our film is ready to be presented to audiences and ready for service within the film. I shall divulge into the early process of creating a film and the different stages needed to actually construct the film and what stage it faces to ensure the overall success. There is multiple stages in which I shall explore to learn about the different routes I need to come across whilst planning, creating and the after stages of post production.
I shall need to explore this, as it allows me to understand the requirements of my film and what is needed of me to turn my production into a success, it is also a vital stage in the overall consumption and guaranteed success entirely altogether.
As I have exposed myself to the requirements and opportunities out there I am thus broadening my research and allowing myself to become exposed towards the commissioning stages and what is needed of me to turn my production into a success.
Commissioning Process presented on Powtoon:
Below are the stages of the commissioning process from stage 1-3, below this sums up the research from stage 4-5 and how I should incorporate this within my studies and allow myself to move on from this and explain how I have exposed myself to the difficulties.
