On this page I shall be focusing upon researching for the next stage within our coursework, this is to produce a film poster in regards towards our recent film production, Eve in which I aspire to distribute the name further by advertising throughout a range of print quality of a film poster.
In order to produce one of good quality I must firstly establish what film posters are and what are the typical conventions of one is to allow myself to be able to successfully produce a high quality print medium that looks professional and authentic.
Convention Summary:
In regards towards this task I have allowed myself to closely identified with the conventions established upon a horror film poster, this can allow myself to closely inform myself of the conventional elements that are needed to be placed onto a film poster in order for the printed medium to be identified as a films poster.
Planning-Ideas Generation
On here I have began to generate ideas into how I can possibly present my film poster in associations with our groups recent project production Eve. Using the recent research that I have completed towards film posters I have established the codes and conventions within previously existing posters to which I have identified and apply towards the next stage of my ancillary. The next stages shall focus upon my research into the first stages of planning my poster.
Mood Board
Gathered upon here are existing film posters that can help to inspire me with ideas in regards on wards codes and conventions, layout and composition for my own ideas for when I begin to draft up mocks of this. This visual work can help to expand quick ideas of and allow myself to work in regards closely to my horror genre.
Summary
Central Imagery:
I like the idea of incorporating the films central focus of displaying how the main character is receiving messages, this could be a good idea to communicate to audiences-the idea of the presenting the forms of messages that show themselves to Eve throughout the production- I like the idea of writing text in chalk on the pavement but I think an eerie idea would to rely on my makeup skills again and recreate the "Its You" message or perhaps something different like "Coming soon" being the main anchorage for audiences as I think it would make it clear that the narrative revolves around the idea of mysterious messages cropping up all over the place to the central character, and how she has no control over it. However, I'm still debating on allowing my character making eye contact with the camera for the poster as it is seen as a key element yet can also be rather mysterious and eerie if we leave the audiences asking more questions regarding character positions.
I like the idea of presenting just the one character-Eve within the frame as it gives the impression she is isolated, alone-a central key convention within horror films that can be seen as easily identifiable for audiences and can clearly be established as the horror genre.
In regards towards my target audience, I believe that it will fit within their appeal as the character Eve would be similarly aged to the target audience which is an important factor in advertising our films production as the target audience can easily identify with lifestyles, pleasures and interests that the main character and supporting characters have. This can help to provide a main narrative of the film which is a key element of a movie poster as the film focuses more upon this character throughout.
Text Placements:
In regards towards text, from the previous research I have undertaken it appears to me that very limited text has been used throughout the existing posters in order to communicate strong visual imagery to communicate the narrative to audiences. I believe that I shall include very limited text within the film poster and include only the conventional text such as title. tagline, date, social media and credits.
In regards towards positions I think that the most conventional of places would be to place the title of the film on top of the films poster for audiences to easily read from a distance away to communicate and promotes the films name. I do need to be careful as obviously our films name is rather short "Eve" so I need to ensure that the exact position I decide to place the title on is perfect and does not interfere and or trail off at an angle.
"Coming soon" is typically seen at the bottom of the films poster as it is conventional that audiences eyes would look below for a release date to preview the film upon looking at the entirety of the poster.
I may position the tagline around the middle or perhaps incorporate this into my main image, I am still decided-I like the idea of presenting the tag line on Eves face and perhaps photo edit the image to actually incorporate the tag line on her face so it perhaps breaks up the portrait or the words burn or reflect off of her which may give a really good impression for communicating the central horror genre to audiences,
Colour Scheme:
Looking at previous texts, I found that is was not conventional to include bright colours. It is mainly dull that hides most of the poster. I want to follow this convention and make the colours of my teaser trailer quite dull and bland. Yet brighten areas where it is most significant and darken the edges to make the central imagery pop out for audiences. The main colours of a horror teaser trailer are grey, black and blue with hits of red, I believe these will be the main colours used in my own poster in order for audiences to establish the genre.
The idea of using these colours would be appealing to my main target audience. Yet I need to be careful as to where I place the colours as I found that the central image is most important to I need to ensure that the dull colours don't cover anything but in fact matches well with the image in order to show the genre and the central message of the film.
Composition: After conducting research into the composition of horror movie posters, I decided I would like to challenge conventions to an extent and go for a landscape position rather than a portrait style. I decided this as I think it would be different and it would allow me to explore a wide range of images o use instead of a plain central portrait that most audiences are use to seeing. Creating a landscape poster will allow me to be adventurous and daring but to also produce a strong yet creative poster that will entice my audiences.
In regards towards how I would position everything in my poster, again I would like to explore this further throughout my initial drawn ut ideas in order to visual exactly where things should go in order to make a more confident decision of the composition pf my horror poster.
Production:
On this day, we began to draft up following ideas into how we may want our design to look like. We started sketching up potential ideas into how we may present our photos, choosing a landscape or portrait form as well as thinking about font and conventions to place within the photo.
My sketches are as followed:
I shall strive to replicate these drawn images for visual images that I can use for my first draft of the film poster, currently, I like the first image that is presented in a landscaped form. Not the typical portrait presentation but adds more excitement and awe to the poster itself. I think this would be quite good but it may be hard in trying to produce this photograph, especially how her hair flies upwards, I may need to think outside the box for this one and perhaps use a hairdryer in order to gain that rushed wind effect than perhaps make it more realistic within Photoshop.
The secondary images that I liked was the additional landscape,
Draft One of Film Poster:
Pictured below is the first draft on my film Poster, I shall wait on the feedback from my teachers to begin on improving this to enhance the overall production. Overall, I think its good for a first draft and certainly challenges the typical expectations of what a film poster is figured to be presented as. I think that I do like it, however personally I may go over the font in various areas as it looks too small too read, I additionally think that the tag line is too small and separated at a distance so I shall also adjust this.
Feedback;
Current Grade: 5.5/10 D+
WWW:
* You've followed/included many conventions of a poster layout.
* The main image fits your genre and hints at the narrative of your production.
* Your use of color is effective as it reflects the genre of the film.
EBI:
* Order of information-make sure that the most important important information is the most prominent eg. re look at your text and consider enlarging your main character slightly.
* Consider how well the fonts you have selected reflect your film genre and appeal to your TA.
* Could you angle the images so the audiences can see your lead actor more clearly?
* Add in blog entries to show how the task was produced so the examiner has evidence of the use of the correct software and your skill in manipulating photographs and page layout and design.
* Check that the information contained in your poster links back to the research you constructed eg. Certification
* How could you make the slogan more engaging and persuasive?
What will I change to make improvements?
With the feedback received from my first draft, my first move is to re-shoot my photograph as the teacher wanted to centralize on the face more to show that the character has significance within the film. My next aim is to perhaps edit more using Photoshop, I shall follow the same editing skills that I used for my first draft, but I need to place evidence on my blog of this to show that it was me who created the effect, so documenting and evidence is very much important to me at this moment in time. So I shall strive in getting this complete.
My next plan of action is too focus on the position, font and size as the information is there just not as aesthetically pleasing as hoped for, so I shall need to complete this asap, preferably by the end of this week.
The deadline for BOTH Ancillary tasks is the 16 January 2017
