Ancillary Task 2

Film Magazine Front Cover
For the second ancillary task, I shall aim to create another promotional piece of imagery, this shall take the form of a front cover for a film magazine to promote our groups recent moving image production, Eve. I shall be creating a film magazine front cover which will feature upon our groups production of Eve in which this will accompany my other piece of work of the film poster and teaser trailer. Before, creating the front cover, I shall need to conduct research into the conventions of film magazines before planning and creating my own. This shall allow me to closely identify with a magazine cover and understand the codes and conventions and what it takes to create my very own film front cover magazine based upon the horror genre for the production of Eve.

Research-Film Magazine Front Cover and Key Terms
The task below shows previous existing examples of different film magazine front covers with the all important conventional codes featured on it, this is important information for myself as I shall be expected to create a front cover magazine of my own based upon our groups recent moving image production Eve. This task can help myself to become introduced to the introduction of front covers of film magazines but to also see what the typical conventional elements that our featured on the front of magazine based upon the horror genre, a genre that our group decided to base our moving image production towards.

The completion of this task can help me with the production of my own magazine cover as I can now identify with the key conventional elements and what they are exactly-these terms can now be used throughout the production of my own magazine front cover for me to used effectively.

Recognizing the Key Terms on a Magazine Front Cover
After the completion of this task, I can now apply these key terms and identify what these features are upon the page of the front cover of a magazine. I think this is rather effective as now I can visually identify where each featured element appears on the front over page of a magazine goes, communicating to me where features are expected to be positioned but also ideas on composition, sizes and position upon the page.

By visually seeing and identifing where featured elements are positioned on the front cover page of a magazine, I can now go on to pin pointing exactly where each elements is presented on the front cover.
Labeling Features on the Front Cover of a Magazine
Referring back to the previous task, I shall now applying my understanding of that task, and apply this towards this one. I shall be using the key terms and investigating towards the where abouts of where they are typically found on the front cover of a film magazine. This can help me to understand layout and presentation, where readers are used to seeing the key terms upon the magazine.

In conclusion towards this task, I have now identified with where the key features are typically expected to be positioned upon the front cover of a magazine, giving me insight towards how I can possibly include and display my own features. From this task, I have learnt that  not all magazines feature everything on the front cover, there as some without the need of banners, thumbnail images or magazine information such as a bar code, so with the drawing conclusion of this task, I can soon move on to start thinking about what feature would benefit myself more and look conventional to be presented and identified as a front cover magazine.
Front Cover Page Analysis:
This task shall look at how elements of a film magazine front cover can appeal to my specific target audience through featured anchorages such as imagery, text, style and presentation. I shall specifically be looking towards front cover of magazines derived from the horror genre to expand my research and knowledge as this is the specific genre I am looking towards.
The chosen magazines I decided to look towards and focus my research in is: Total Film and Empire.

Empire Magazine:
In regards towards this magazine, I liked how it more or less focused upon the one featured film of that time, but offers additional thumbnail images to guarantee that that's not all the magazine would be focusing upon specifically. The magazine cover was also not in your face and too text heavy which gave readers some space to piece together what the magazine cover was presenting to them. I like the idea of having a single character presented on the front of the magazine, especially in the middle where the importance of the character is significantly heightened. The question is for me: what could I get my character portrayal to be doing throughout the photo shoot that would really represent the film. The house style was nice, which suggests to me that this magazine was more formal compared to Total Film and perhaps appeals to a more specif target audience within the B-A1 categories of a more higher class.
The only problem I have regarding this magazine is that I don't like the lack of information about what is inside as it can put off potential readers who don't like the particular franchise or genre of film, so I need to really engage with my readers and offer them diverse features to persuade them to consume the entirety of the magazine upon purchase.

Total Film:
I like the idea of having again a single character portrayed on the front cover, I think this really reflects our film Eve, especially where the central character Eve dominates most scenes, so its important to highlight her as the significant character within this production. The problem I may encounter is that I'm limiting myself to appealing to the female readers, so I need to ensure that I portray my character effectively so that it can appeal to a male audience as well to ensure I appeal to a broad diverse group of readers.
I also like the house style, and layout, its rather text and images heavy, which I find effective as it certainly grasps readers attention from a good distance away.
two of the main characters on the cover as it would appeal to both male and female readers opposed to just a single sex character which would appeal to one gender more than the other. I don't like however the lack of information about what is inside as it can put off potential readers who don't like the particular franchise or genre of film.
The targeting of the audience is effective in this cover due to the house style and language, however the lack of information could have a negative impact on the target audience.

In Conclusion, this task will help me with my production as it has enabled me to see the layout of products similar to my own, as well as identifying with the conventional features placed onto the front cover of a film magazine to give me that visual idea of what to expect to place onto my own when I begin to plan.
Taking both of the used front cover magazine layout, presentation and plan, I aim to use the layouts of both of the front covered magazines from Total Film and Empire as inspiration and present my main characters as the main anchorage, yet I need to plan this effectively so I can ensure that I appeal to both genders of my audience.

Planning of my own Front Cover Page Magazine

As research towards film magazines has now been completed, I can now move onto planning my own front cover page of my very own film magazine. The planning stages are very important for myself as it allows me to brainstorm and communicate visually regarding specific plans I have based upon what I want to do for my own creation. I now aim to create the front cover page of a magazine based upon our groups recent production, Eve. Throughout the next part, my planning work shall be shown in order to show an understanding towards how I got to my final plans and was able to soon produce my first draft.

Mood Board
This is my mood board based upon my planning stages for my own magazine front cover. I chose these particular style covers as they fit the layout, presentation style I aim to create for my own production. I know that these would related to my target audience and aim to appeal to them.
I decided to look towards front covers that seem to hold a lot more information and features, I think making the page rather busy with images and text would be effective as it guarantees that my magazine contains a lot of informative information regarding new releases of that season, making the printed production appear desirable for my readers. I like the features of thumbnail images and aspire to create this and incorporate into my own magazine to go with my central images effectively, offering more story lines than just the main central feature, this would open my appeal up as I'm not focusing upon the one story which can be seen as effective as my readers may not want to hear about the film I'm promoting. As the genre is horror, I shall aim to create a magazine using dull colors such as blue, grey and green shades to show a tense yet frightening atmosphere, I know I would need to fit within this specific style so font colors such as white, yellow, red and black shall be used to stand out from the magazine and make easy readings for the readers. I feel like these colors would go in well with my dark theme and really appeal to my directed target audiences of young people age 15-25.

Overall, I think I am happy enough to start planning up the style pf my front cover magazine, this planning task can communicate to me visually about certain features I like and don't like. Allowing me to quickly progress on wards and begin constructing my own plans for my magazine feature. I can now begin to think what I want in my own magazine, and start drafting ideas up into how I could draw these out rough to communicate to others how I desire my front cover page to be presented.

Brainstorming-Mind Map
Following on from my mood board, I have now began to think about what my ideas could possibly carry, so the next task was producing a brainstorming page in which I have come up with a few ideas of what could be included on my front cover for the preparation of my first draft. I have taken into account of significant features such as imagery, presentation and color schemes that I may want to use for my own to give me an idea of what I'm working towards.
In conclusion, I have drafted up ideas towards initial ideas of what I can possibly create with the production of my own front cover magazine. Below, I have summed up what I can possibly do and create for my own production piece as I move on towards the initial ideas of presenting my magazines front cover.

Images
I want the image to focus on the one central character Eve, as she takes up most of the footage throughout the teaser trailer, I want to communicate to readers that this character is central and shall be centered upon her mostly throughout the film. In regards towards visual poses that my character could have, I like the idea of one of her hands coming up towards the camera and opening up. I like the idea of the hand outstretched as than I can edit it to have lightening strikes coming out from her hand to show supernatural traces coming out to communicate the sub genre of supernatural elements incorporated into the film. I think this could be quite effective and a potential idea to explore throughout the initial ideas.

Secondly, I also like the idea of a mid shot close up with her body slightly angled to face the camera. I think this could be a good shot as I can make the character look on slightly in the distance but readers can still establish the characters face. With this pose, I can than incorporate text around the character and make the magazine front cover desirable in information and make it as appealing as I can. But in response towards this potential idea, it may be a bit too conventional and may not stand out as much to readers so I need to ensure that I explore it, but make it as unique as possible to make it as eye catching as possible.

Thirdly, I like the idea of the lightening edit, only this time, place around my characters pose to perhaps show pathetic fallacy which could be good in communicating my genre to readers. The pose could be a single, side shot, with the camera slightly facing up to show the character Eves importance within the frame, I could edit her face to make it quite scary, so it conveys the supernatural elements incorporated around the character in the frame shot.

With these ideas, I would like to draw up and visually see throughout my sketches what they could potentially be like. With my favorite ideas looking the best, I shall take photos of them and edit to be incorporated and made into my front cover magazine. As I review my ideas now, I like the first idea I explained about the hand reaching up, but I shall sketch out roughly first and see whether its effective or not. I shall aim to have my character looking at the camera and giving direct address to communicate her importance and significant role within the film, allowing her to be instantly recognized.

Color Scheme
The color Scheme of the magazine should bear the colors derived by the horror genre. I aim to use the colors of dark blues, grey, white and black so that the photo matches well with the colors but it appeals by communicating the narrative of the film. The use of the blue grey colors shows the genre more than anything but the dark them can also appeal to a male audience, as the central character would be female, so this could be an off putting feature for man, so the use of the dark colors conveys the impression that this wont be a girly chick film but something far more sinister than this. The white, blues are all light colors that can be easily seen on the magazine and stand out to my readers as I aim to direct them.

Composition
The grid layout is the conventional composition for magazine covers as it allows me to position the cover with a symmetrical grid which focuses on the four main elements of the magazine. This composition would also be the easiest for me to produce compared to others.
I shall place my main anchorage at the center of the magazine, featuring my main story feature in which I aim to position my thumbnails at the bottom, my cover lines at the sides and my masthead at the top of the magazine. Additional information such as the bar code, price and date shall be positioned on the side of the magazine, shall be quite small to indicate that it is not the main anchorage of the text, but it is still there to inform readers of the magazines issue number, price and date. I shall soon explore many ways of how to present my magazine front cover, perhaps whilst drawing out sketches I could possibly look into drawing how I could layout my magazine.

Text/Placement
The placement upon the masthead, footer bar and taglines are all conventional according to the research I have conducted into film magazines along with additional information I have conducted into the film magazines along with cover lines and a main featured cover lines. The placement of the bar code shall be at the middle side of the magazine, so it wont draw attention from the main anchorage or the cover line. I need to ensure the text is not to text heavy, as this may bore my readers, but I also want to show its informative information that shall be featured throughout the magazine. I also want to add thumbnail images, I think this could be a good feature and can really demonstrate the idea of my production pieces being a front cover of the magazine effectively well. Yet I need to be careful and ensure that the thumbnail images are my own and communicate different genres being displayed throughout the magazine.

Initial Idea Sketches
Below, I have sketched out initial ideas of what presentation layout and imagery I would aspire to create for the purposes of the creation of my front cover magazine. I think this could be effective for myself as I can quickly visualize what it could look like, and what poses and actions my model should do throughout the photo shoot of gathering photos. These photos shall help me towards refining my ideas and picking a preferred drawing that I can begin collecting photos on in tomorrows session. With each drawing study, I have evaluated what was the best feature how could I improve and should I use it for my own magazine.

Style File
This task was performed by analyzing the features and decisions I decided to investigate and perhaps use for the creation of my own magazine front cover. The style file was a great way for me to explore all color schemes, fonts, photos as well as cover lines or any features that existing film magazines have included that I like the look of and perhaps incorporate this style into my own magazine.

With the completion of this task, I am now ready and set to begin on working towards constructing ideas for my own magazine front cover. I think this will be effective for myself as now with the completion of this task, I am now aware of any features of presentation styles that I may want to include. I like the idea of making the cover quite busy, by including features such as thumbnail images and cover lines regarding additional story lines.

Creation of my Magazine Front Cover
Upon the completion of my research stages in regards towards magazine front covers, I am now ready to use this research and start formulating ideas towards what I can possibly create for the production of my own front cover. The research conducted shall act as a visual guide with informative information regarding existing magazines to help influence and aspire ideas in generating my own production.

Magazine Front Cover Ideas
To start the drafting up ideas, I have made a quick reflection of ideas considering what features I do like, by planning this out roughly, it can act as guide for myself for considering different aspects of the front cover such as composition, color scheme and images.

Sketches
To move on, I shall be now starting the visual creation of my magazine piece in which my research and planning shall come together and start to pull forwards to create my magazine front cover. Throughout the research conducted, I shall be displaying what I know and have found out and producing these into quick rough drafting sketches to display ideas visually as to what my magazine can take the form of. Pictured below are the final look of my magazines initial ideas and how I think I want my magazine to take the form of, giving me a rough guide towards things I can work towards and ultimately what my magazine could look like.

Sketches Evaluation

Conclusion:

After self evaluating each of my three initial ideas, I believe it has been very successful in help me visual what the expectations of my desired look for the magazine is expected to look like. Now that I have self evaluated, I have chosen a central image and model pose that I believe would be good enough for my magazine front cover. Yet I still want to explore and gather a wide range of poses just in case my original idea failed to work out for myself to ensure I have a wide range of photos to pick from and use. Thus offers me a safety net if I fail in my plans to use the intended pose of the hand reaching out.
The next step is to now take photos during the next media session to start the composing of the front cover magazine.

Draft Written Content
Upon reviewing my sketches out, I am now beginning to finalise my plans and work on the text that shall be incorporated into my magazine. That way I am ensuring that I am targeting my target audience by directly linking to the magazines central theme and genre. This helps to increase the magazines appeal and help visualise if the magazine will be a success or not.

Masthead: FILM EMPIRE
(I believe this masthead is a success for myself as the title, FILM instantly shows audiences what the magazine will be covering, and thus directly addressing my readers whereas EMPIRE connotes a vast range of knowledge and power suggesting this magazine is desirable and rich with information exclusive to the readers upon purchase.

In conclusion, now that I have decided upon what text to be featured upon the front cover of my film magazine, I shall now proceed to create my visual plans and bring them to life. My next step is to start the photoshoot in order to gain the images needed to edit  to then compose into a magazine. I shall refer back to this planning in order to help guide me in the construction of my first draft of the magazine front cover.
Photo shoot for Magazine front cover photos
This media session consisted of our group coming together once again to show off our sketches and desired poses for the model (me) to visually communicate to what poses they would like for each of their own magazine shoots.
To move on from the last photo shoot, we made sure we took photos with and without makeup, with the without makeup shoots first so we cannot trace any of blood patches as you could slightly see in our poster shoots which was unfortunately, so avoid this we made sure we took the photos without makeup first.
I made sure that I fulfilled each group members request and expectation of how they wanted there photo to be like, my group members more or less wanted a lot of blood for theirs meaning we had to do my shoot first than move on the Abis and Danielle's to recreate their desired sketches.

Photo shoot for the Magazine Front Cover:
This power point shows the photos that our group managed to obtain, we each had separate ideas from our initial idea sketches to which the model (myself) was able to reproduce to satisfy everyone. We spent the whole afternoon in gathering photos, ensuring we had a wide range to choose from and select consisting from outside and inside/with makeup and without makeup to ensure we had a collection to each choose from. The power point below shows my photo shoot and the desired photos I wanted following on from my initial idea sketches to e able to use and begin working on.

The shoot was a success and we all managed to gather photos from a wide range of angles, lighting, makeup and settings, we now must evaluate our favourite photosd that go well with expectations and desires and see which photos would be our choosen image for our final production piece.

First Draft Outcome:
Below is the final outcome of my first draft for my film magazine Film Express. I think for a first draft, it is not a bad look however I believe I would be tempted to change the photo for my second draft of my model perhaps grasping the feather rather than reaching out for it. For now, I shall wait on my teachers feedback regarding the first draft of my magazine front cover to improve further upon this.
